I was able to say this yesterday. It's strange being able to say this. In a family of eight children, everything seems to get done before I get the chance to - a family of consonant over achievers.
I've lived in a strangely manufactured jungle. Everything around me is a carefully calculated combination of man's strength and ingenuity, and the wonderful blessings of the natural progression of an animated world; synthetic and organic; magnets and miracles.
Everywhere you look is filled. There is no emptiness; there is no vacuum. The lack of anything couldn't possibly exist in this vibrant, ever changing, ever expanding world. There has been so many to pass through this way that no spot is left unclaimed. Every trail is blazed - the searched and the intuitive.
Yet I was able to claim my own spot, create my own mythos, and dedicate a small corner of greatness to myself. I was able to say, "I'll the be the first in my family..."
It's a phrase said by the colossi of history. The greats and leaders have, and in many ways needed to, say these 8 words. It's a phrase that screams progression and change. It shows stagnation has no place in the world you have created for yourself - boarders and limitations are no consequence.
Why was I able to say this? That's the sad part. The exchange went like this:
"Oh you're going off to grad school next year?"
"Yes, I'll be starting in the fall."
"How wonderful! Is your wife graduated or will she need to transfer."
"Actually, I'm not married."
"Really? You're getting out of BYU not married. How did you manage that?."
"I don't know. But I'll be the first in my family..."
